We've had a busy summer so far! Soccer, swimming lessons, trips to the pool, and trips to the library have been staples. The next few weeks are filled not only with those, but birthdays (Daddy's, Pop's, cousin Brady's, and a classmates), weddings (2 in 2 weeks) and a baptism to celebrate. Thankfully Ainsley is pretty flexible and friendly because we'll need it in the upcoming weeks.
The last few weeks have been hit with a massive heat wave, with record temps over 100 degrees and humidity making it feel much hotter. That made for a lot of indoor time and attempts to find things to do inside. It also made it a great time to make significant progress on Ainsley's Big Girl Room! On July 4, Daddy and Mr. David repainted the room - this time to purple. The room is now officially the "purple room". Over the weekend, we ventured into the heat to purchase sheets, a quilt and a bed rail for the big girl bed. The weekend before we'd purchased new mattresses and box springs for the big girl bed - they make it over 3" off the floor! There are still items that are needed for the room, but beginning last Sunday night (7/8) Ainsley began sleeping in her purple room all night long!! She's just amazing. We tried Saturday, but our routine was off and it just didn't work. Then, on Sunday, she stirred during her nap so Daddy rocked her back to sleep and instead of putting her back in the crib, put her in her big girl bed. That seems to be all she needed. Every night since then, she's slept in her big girl bed. The next step is to move all the rest of her stuff into the purple room - clothes, decorations, books, and toys and remove some of the storage/guest room stuff so that the room is truly "her" room. Then we have to start the process of bringing baby stuff down from the attic for Squirt 2.
During one of the recent thunderstorms, one of our trees split in two. Yesterday, the rest was finally cut down. While we were/are sad to lose a tree, we are even more bummed it was the one that had her swing in it! Ainsley kept seeing the tree and saying "Our tree is broken." Can't put anything past her!
Last weekend we braved the heat and went blueberry picking. A first for all 3 of us. It was HOT, even at 815 am, but we managed to pick almost 4 pounds of blueberries. Ainsley probably ate about a half pound in addition to that. She loved walking around the bushes and picking off the berries - a few even made it into our bucket to bring home. She would walk under the bushes and exclaim "I in the jungle!" We went picking with our friend Kathy and Ainsley would keep asking "Where Kathy go?" so we had to keep her in our sights! I think she was afraid of us losing her in the jungle :).
This week Ainsley started her first swimming lessons without Mommy in the water - just Ainsley and her teacher. The first day she got all worked up, that even though she did a great job and did all the things asked of her, she cried the whole time. Yesterday Daddy took her and she cried at first, then jumped in and was starting to jump, swim and roll to her back by herself! After that class she said "I like my teacher". Her teacher is Miss Samantha, or to Ainsley - 'Mantha. We have 2 more days this week and another 4 days next week, we are so excited to see how much she learns!
On Father's Day we went to the baseball game with Pop and Alexis, David and Conor. Ainsley got her first cotton candy - it was a HIT. Daddy wasn't so excited she had it, but Mommy couldn't stop Pop from buying it when the vendor came around. She really had fun at the game, watching people throw the ball, dancing to the music with Pop, and eating everyone's food. Ever since, she talks about going to see baseball with Pop, Daddy, Mommy and Conor.
Pop and Nan Nan gave us a huge zucchini - over a foot long. Mommy and Ainsley used part of it over the weekend to make zucchini bread. Ainsley was the greatest sous chef! She helped Mommy measure out all the ingredients, sift the flour, open the eggs, and put things in the mixer. We had a bunch of fun and now Mommy is trying to think of the next thing to cook together. The bread came out great, but because of the vanilla and brown sugar, a bit brown. The next day Ainsley kept mistaking the bread for sausage. Good thing we had some sausage in the house (breakfast ones), because she just wouldn't give up on having her own sausage to eat! Even after we let her try the bread too. The kid LOVES her meat.
